Laboratory testing is undergoing a radical transformation as services are outsourced to external specialists that can provide the levels of expertise and response now required Within five years the majority of food manufacturers in the UK will be outsourcing their labo-ratory testing work to specialist food laboratories. Many already use independent labs to provide nutritional information required for their food labelling, and to test for pesticide residues, for instance. But it won't be long before almost all food companies, including many of the biggest, will eventually be forced to hand over all but some routine quality control testing to independent test houses.
