Stringency urged on environment

Allowing the UK to diverge from EU environment legislation could "in theory" pave "the way for the UK to exceed any standards set by the EU", a leading law firm has claimed. According to Eversheds Sutherland, there is widespread concern that the Government will not uphold existing standards of environmental protection when the Brexit transition period comes to an end on 31 December this year. The Environment Bill is now making its way through UK Parliament after being delayed at the end of 2019. Once enacted, the Bill will set legally binding environmental improvement targets in the areas of air quality, water, biodiversity and resource efficiency and waste reduction.
