Consumers are being encouraged to focus on the quality of calories consumed, rather than just the quantity, in a new initiative from the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF).Developed by the BNF's nutrition science team, the Quality Calorie (QC) concept aims to get the public to focus on healthy nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and fibre - and limit those that are of concern, such as free sugars, salts and saturated fat.By focusing on nutritional quality, the QC concept can help people to think about small, simple swaps that can be made every day to improve the nutritional quality of their diets, for the same or fewer calories, the BNF said. One suggestion was to swap a bowl of chocolate-flavoured cereal for porridge with semi-skimmed or skimmedmilk with sliced banana, which would provide more B vitamins, potassium and wholegrains, and less free sugars. Another was to trade in white toast with butter or jam with wholegrain toast with peanut butter, which offered more fibre, iron and protein, and less free sugars.
