Środkiem do pokonania konkurencji będzie posiadanie rynków zbytu na oferowane produkty i usługi, a jedynym sposobem na to, by mieć rynki, jest posiadanie dominujących na nim marek.%The paper presents the origin and role of intangibles in doing business. In theory and practice 4 groups of intangible assets can be distinguished, i.e. rights, relationships, grouped intangibles, intellectual property. From the accountancy point of view some intangibles are treated as assets and presented in the balance sheet. The problem is that the book values of such items usually differ substantially from the market valuation. On the other hand, many other intangible assets do not occur in the balance sheet - despite having certain, quite often very substantial, value. The key issue in analysing the value of intangibles is an ability to identify them and reliable valuation. In practice three main approaches are being used, i.e. the cost approach, income approach, and market approach.
