High-density polyethylene recycling update

High-density polyethylene is one of the most widely used plastics for containers of all types. Uses include blowmoulded and injection-moulded bottles for milk, water and beverages, and a variety of non-food products, sacks and other film applications, and drums, pails, crates and pallets. In this update, we look at recycling rates for various types of packaging that are made from the plastic, and at specific markets for the recycled material. In most places, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) recycling rates lag behind those for polyethylene terephthalate (PET), even when only bottles are considered. However, in the USA the continued decline in PET recycling rates has allowed HDPE (recycling rates to surpass those for PET.
