Global demand for pharmaceutical packaging is projected to increase 5.9% per year to $126 billion in 2023. Growth opportunities will be for products that help patients adhere to prescription and clinical trial medication schedules; reduce drug dispensing errors by institutional and retail pharmacies; improve the ease and safety of drug administration procedures; increase the marketing aesthetics of over-the-counter (OTC) products; and combat drug counterfeiting, diversion and tampering. In 2023, plastic bottles, blister packaging and parenteral containers will lead sales in the primary container segment, accounting for 81% of demand. Plastic bottles will remain the most widely used containers for bulk and prescription dose packaging. Blister packaging will see increased use in unit dose and clinical trial formats based on its adherence, expanded labeling, high visibility and built-in track-and-trace benefits. Parenteral containers will benefit from the widening availability of injectable medicines for cancer, diabetes and healthcare-associated infections.
