British Museum in London: A Roof for the 'Great Court'

Waagner-Biro was commissioned by the British Museum to build an unusual glass and steel structure to roof over the Great Court. Construction for the Millennium Project got underway in March 1998. Building work on the roof is scheduled to begin in June 1999 and to be completed in autumn 1999. This steel and glass structure exceeding 6000 m~2 in area will then span the inner courtyard complex of the Great Court at the center of the British Museum, creating one of the largest public squares in Europe. The two billion schilling project is receiving some ATS 612 million in financial support from the Millennium Commission and another ATS 321 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.%Die Waagner-Biro AG wurde vom British Museum mit der Ausführung einer außergewöhnlichen Glas-Stahl-Konstruktion zur Überdachung des „Great Court" beauftragt. Die Bauarbeiten für das Millenniumsprojekt wurden im März 1998 begonnen und werden im Herbst 2000 abgeschlossen sein. Die über 6.000 m~2 große Stahl-Glas-Ronstruktion wird dann das In-nenhofensemble des Great Court im Zentrum des British Museum überspannen und damit einen der größten öffentlichen Plätze Europas bilden. Das Zweimilliarden-Schilling-Projekt wird seitens der Millennium Commis-sion mit rund 612 Mio. öS sowie seitens des Heritage Lottery Fund mit ca. 321 Mio. öS unterstützt.
