From a single Nissen hut in 1972, the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum has expanded and refined so that today there are two hangars, seven themed display halls, numerous other buildings, over 20,000 items, 50 aircraft, a riverside walk, superb cafe and loads of special events. All this is done with 300 members and a hardcore of volunteers and one full-time Keeper (Huby Fairhead) who make this one of the most enchanting and friendliest of venues. I was taken on a tour of the site by museum chairman, Ian Hancock and he introduced me to other members of the team. The atmosphere at Flixton is a 'family' one, volunteers having their regular days and specific projects, but all 'mucking in' when needed. Don Thurston looks after the Air-Sea Rescue and Coastal Command displays. Like the museum itself, this fascinating exhibit started in a modest way; as a small trestle table bulging with items on special event days. Now it encompasses two halls.
