Painted in dull black livery but sporting the 103 Squadron identification letters 'PM-Z', Avro Lancaster III ED828, stood forlornly at Elsham Wolds, Lincolnshire. The 'Skipper', Sgt Bill Steel (nicknamed 'Kiwi' by his crew) with Tommy Beautyman, the Flight Engineer, walked round Z-for-Zebra doing the pre-flight examination of control surfaces before clambering aboard via the starboard rear entrance ladder, followed by the rest of his crew.
