It was not until 1941 that some thought was given to a two-seat conversion trainer based on the Supermarine Spitfire. By that stage in the war, the advanced training cycle was such that a dedicated version was not necessary and indeed could be termed a luxury. There were examples of 'in-field' two-seater conversions during World WarTwo (the RAF in Sicily with Mk.V ES127 and the Soviets with at least one so-called 'Spitfire IXUTI') but the concept of a dedicated trainer version of the Spitfire seemed to be stillborn. In the 'warbird' era, there have been, to date, two conversions from single-seaters to two-seat status.
