Charles 'Chas' Walsh, a bank clerk from a small town near Perth in Western Australia, enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) on June 20,1940 as an airman pilot 'for the duration of the war plus 12 months'. After completing basic service training at the Initial Training School at Somers in Victoria, he started pilot training with 3 Course, first at Parafield in South Australia before going to 1 Service Flying Training School at Point Cook.
