By 1948 the euphoria that followed the ending of World War Two had largely evaporated. Distrustful of the intentions of the 'West' and fearful of another invasion, the Soviet Union was ruthlessly assimilating her newly 'liberated' border nations into a buffer zone. Things turned worse on June 24, 1948 when the USSR blockaded access to Berlin; the German capital lying within the Soviet zone of occupation.
