End of the line for Woodford

BAE Systems announced on September 15 that its Woodford site in Cheshire will close at the end of 2012, on completion of the Nimrod MRA.4 production contract and with the loss of 630 jobs. It is intended that there will be a phasedrnrun-down of the site, in line with the production programme. The will also be staff cuts at BAE's other plants at Samlesbury and Warton, both in Lancashire, along with Farnborough in Hampshire. Woodford airfield and the factoryrnhave a long history, first opening its runway in the mid-1920s for use by the Lancashire Aero Club.
