Ironically it was called a 'rest'. But of course he knew it would be anything but that. Rhodesian Fg Off Rodney Simmonds had concluded his first operational tour flying Supermarine Spitfires with 238 Squadron in the Mediterranean. This had included a spell in the Toulon area after the invasion of southern France. (See page 24.)rnSo he was due a 'rest'. Rodney summed up this period as follows: ".. .doing fighter affiliation exercises for the benefit of Liberator and Lancaster pilots at Foggia in Italy. It was the most dangerous flying I was ever called upon to do - and that included my two forced landings!"
