Acombination of combat losses, training accidents and the relatively small production run compared to the later Merlin-engined variants meant that few Allison V-1710-powered A-models survived their time in the military. Most that did either went to the scrapper or to the new generation of Cleveland air racers who appreciated the variant's low-altitude performance. A few were given to trade schools for use as instructional airframes. Back in the 1950s when Ed Maloney was laying down plans for The Air Museum, he knew it was important to rescue gems when and where he found them.
