'If I take the wings of the morning and remain in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there also shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold mine'-extract from the 139th Psalm (the "Airman's Psalm") engraved on the north window at the Air Forces Memorial, Runnymede. At 9:36am on April 6, 1942, a 407 Squadron Lockheed Hudson lifted off from Bircham Newton, Norfolk, on an anti-shipping strike over the North Sea to the Danish coast. Within the aircraft - probably AM696 - was a Canadian crew, Plt Off James Foley, Plt Off Herman Lowry, F/Sgt Norman Leckie and, occupying the navigator/observer's position, my grandfather, W/O Daniel Allister McCann. Thousands of miles from his family's home in Moose Jaw, Daniel and his colleagues rose into the morning sky, maintaining strict radio silence.
