Frank Walker-Smith joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve in Derby in the late 1930s and, like the others in his peer group, gave sterling service during World War Two. He was one of the first trainees at Burnaston, Derbyshire, to gain his pilot's brevet; only Alan Feary (see FlyPast July 2010) won the coveted 'wings' before him. Born at Spondon in January 1917, Frank was the only son of Arthur and Frances, though he had two older sisters, Freda and Hester.
