Gatow museum to get Chipmunk

The Militarhistorisches Museum (MHM) at the former RAF airfield at Gatow in Berlin (featured in the February FlyPast) is to receive DHC Chipmunk T.10 WG466. This aircraft was among the last Chipmunks to be operated by the RAF Gatow Station Flight before the Allied withdrawal from Berlin was completed in 1994. It was flown from Berlin on hazardous 'Cold War' photo-reconnaissance missions. This aircraft's 'sister' ship is WG486 which remains airworthy with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The Chipmunk will go to the MHM under a loan arrangement with Berlin's AlliiertenMuseurn (Allied Museum), to whom WG466 was donated upon its retirement from RAF service. Once displayed at its premises in the borough of Zehlendorf, the aircraft has not been on public view for some years. It is due at Gatow in Z014, but will return to the AlliiertenMuseurn in time for its planned move to the former Tempelhof Airport, currently expected in 2018.
