Many pilots achieved 'ace' status flying the Hawker Hurricane in the Battle of Britain, but few were more successful than Canadian-born Fg Off Willie McKnight dfc. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, in November 1918, he was only the second Canadian pilot to achieve five or more 'kills' in World War Two, and despite his death in January 1941 aged just 22, he remained his nation's fifth highest scoring pilot at the end of the conflict. McKnight joined the RAF in 1939 and flew with 242 Squadron, firstly during the final phase of the Battle for France in 1940 and later that year in the Battle of Britain. Under the leadership of Douglas Bader, McKnight's talents as a fighter pilot blossomed.
