Between them, B-17 Fortresses and B-24 Liberators shared the Eighth Air Force's daylight pounding of targets in Europe. Boeing's product took most of the limelight, yet the Consolidated bomber was faster, had longer range and could carry a greater warload, which explains why the Liberator took part in some of the most dangerous, and most costly, raids of the war. Soon after the US entered the war, a maximum priority target was the Ploesti oil fields in Romania. The complex of nine refineries and subsidiary plants produced at least a third of Germany's oil and a third of the Luftwaffe's fuel.
