For arguably the first man to shoot down a MiG over Vietnam, Don Kilgus had the right training as a high school kid: "He made his own control-line planes, with small gas engines, and flew them at model airplane meets," revealed younger brother Jim. "The shelves in his bedroom were loaded with trophies. He'd travel to nearby states in his 1947 Chevy to take part in these 'dogfights' where six guys in the centre of a circle with their airplanes on 60-foot control lines would fight each other with a six-foot streamer attached to the tail. The objective was to cut the other guy's streamer with your prop: the pilot with the longest streamer at the end would win!
