I first met Peter Else (featured in David J Bailey's article about 610 Squadron, August issue) in 1977, having joined Marshall of Cambridge Engineering on leaving the RAF. He was then chief engineer of light aircraft, and was also awarded the Queen's Silver Jubilee medal that same year. He retired a decade later. Peter had been the very first engineer apprentice at the then Marshall's Flying School, Cambridge, in January 1935. He started flying training there, having joined the RAFVR in February 1938. His first squadron was No 72, at Church Fenton, North Yorkshire (at which I served as a Jet Provost QFI in the 1960s). In June 1940, he was attached to 610 at Gravesend, Kent, with just over 300 hours in his logbook.
