Air warfare study

Authorship by a British Army officer and a foreword by the RAF chief of the air staff, gives an inclination of this book's scholarly nature. The first of a two-volume study, it is divided into four parts, each of which highlights an aspect of air power: Antecedents and Training; Air Superiority; Strike; and The War at Sea, the latter covering the part played by the Fleet Air Arm. Each chapter has a descriptive title that, very cleverly, is taken from an appropriate formation or unit motto. The author's Commonwealth theme is also reflected in that the headings include mottos of a Rhodesian-manned Lancaster squadron and an Australian Sunderland unit. This book is no dreary tome, but a well-written and engrossing read that cohesively blends descriptions of policy and strategy with the experience of the individual airman. Complemented by 14 highly appropriate maps and no fewer than 25 annexes, it is mostly illustrated with high-quality images. Importantly, to the fore is the crucial part played by the Commonwealth Air Forces and the sacrifices made by men of all colours and creeds from across the globe. Highly recommended.
