I particularly enjoyed reading Academic Wings by Gp Capt Tom Eeles in the June issue. I would like to add some points about the Hawk and Pilatus PC-9.I worked at BAe Brough from 1982 until 2003 starting as a technical apprentice and ending up with the job title 'senior designer'.The Hawk T.1 was a product of both Kingston and Brough with the wings, flaps, ailerons, tailplane, fin, rudder, and various systems being designed at the latter, while the fuselage and other parts were done at Kingston. Brough became the design authority for the Hawk in 1991.Most if not all of the Hawk T.1/T.1As still flying with the RAF went through the Hawk fuselage replacement programme, or Mod 2010 as it was officially known. It was a joint venture between the RAF and BAe. The former took the wings, fin, rudder and tailplane off the aircraft, and stripped out the systems. They then sent the fuselage to Brough where the forward section was removed and the rest scrapped. A modified Mk.65 forward-centre, centre and rear fuselage were then fitted.
