Before 1942, the name Guadalcanal carried little, if any, significance; it was nothing but one of the many islands forming the South Pacific's Solomon archipelago. After 1942 however, it was sealed in history as the place the Allies launched their first prominent assault of the Pacific war. One of those fighting was Harry 'Dirty Eddie' March who went from being a US national pentathlon champion to a fighter pilot. Serving on the aircraft carriers USS Enterprise and Saratoga, Harry took part in actions across the Pacific, and eventually became an ace while flying the mighty Vought Corsair with US Navy unit VF-17, the famous 'Skull and Crossbones' squadron.
