Top-scoring Mustang ace Major George Preddy and his airplane represented the best of America during the Second World War. General John C. Meyer, commander of the 487th Fighter Squadron and the 352nd Fighter Group in England during the war, knew that as well and said, "George was one of the greatest fighter pilots who ever squinted through a gunsight; he was the complete fighter pilot." As we proudly enter our 25th year of publishing Flight Journal, what better way to commemorate this milestone than with a feature about one of the greatest aerial warriors of the last century and his perfectly designed war machine-and notably the greatest fighter of all time-the North American P-51 Mustang. And to take it further, the story is written by present-day fighter pilot and Squadron Leader Clive Rowley and includes photos of the same type of airplane Preddy flew, shot by one of the world's best aviation photographers, John Dibbs.
