It's fitting that a book that reads like fiction but is factual and invests so much in detail is titled Lucky 666. This excellent read, set in the Pacific theater of World War II, is the story of a misfit crew assembling their own beefed-up B-17 bomber from scraps (naming it "Lucky 666"). They eventually face a critical recon mission In which they generously gave themselves a 10 percent chance of surviving. Before we reach the recounting of their amazing flight, the authors provide insight Into the sparring between Army and Navy as well as the day-to-day challenges faced by those serving in the Pacific.
