US proposals to drastically increase the number of flight hours required for first officers have drawn concerns the rules could hurt hiring in the regional airline sector and damage the image of US regulators in the international community. Doubts emerged during a Senate aviation subcommittee hearing on 20 March, which focused on US Federal Aviation Administration implementation of congressional mandates from 2010, made in the wake of the previous year's Colgan Air Bombardier Q400 crash near Buffalo, New York. Included in the new law is a requirement first officers earn an airline transport rating, generally demanding l,500h of flight time, rather than a commercial licence which needs 250h. No changes were proposed for captains.
