US Navy to target 60% range boost for AIM-9X variant

The US Navy hopes to increase the employment range of Raytheon's AIM-9X Block III air-to-air missile by 60% over current Sidewinder variants, due to the unique needs of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) says. The new weapon is scheduled to achieve initial operational capability in 2022.
