US airlines will generate more substantial cost savings from equipping their aircraft with next-generation air navigation capabilities than from investing in costly technical solutions to boost performance, according to claims. The suggestion comes from Nexa Capital Partners, a public-private body set up to help carriers fund fleet upgrades with equipment suitable for the USA's Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). It suggests that it will cost an airline about $555,000 to upgrade a Boeing 737-800 to the NextGen standard. In comparison, Nexa says it would cost an airline about $12 million to re-engine the aircraft and $885,000 to install winglets. Nexa estimates the savings generated by the NextGen equipment to be at $6.5 million over five years, compared with $7.1 million for re-engining and $2 million for winglets.
