Air Ministry left failed S-32 short

The failure of the Shorts S-32 transatlantic airliner to enter service had as much to do with the Air Ministry's dysfunctional relationship with Imperial Airways as with the outbreak of hostilities which led to the project's abandonment in 1940 [Flight International, 17 December 2013-6 January 2014). The ministry ordered three examples, one pressurised, under specification 14/38 in 1938 - a belated three years after it had determined to organise a land-plane route between Newfoundland (Gander) and Ireland (Rine-anna/Shannon). Flying boat facilities were also to be built at Rineanna, with Foynes to be used for proving flights.
