The Opportunity Presented in Doing the Work of Two People

In the past few months you've read in this column about "doing more with less." I'm here to tell you about the Next Big Thing - "doing more with more," or consolidating areas of management within an organization. In my case I am now working as both fleet manager and facilities manager, with responsibility for information systems, materials, and other central support services functions including accounting and safety. To be sure I am not the only one; in NAFA's Pacific Northwest Chapter alone, the fleet managers in Kirkland, Marysville and Tukwilla, Washington, all have responsibilities in areas outside of the traditional fleet arena, particularly in facilities, as has another colleague at a local university. Now, consolidation is not something new; it's just on the up-cycle and it presents us with a tremendous professional opportunity.
