You can spend all the time you want preparing that PowerPoint presentation, but one thing may still catch you off guard: the bored looks on the faces of the audience before you even begin. Surely your information is nothing to yawn at; it's just that they've most likely seen it all before: whiz-bang graphics, screaming bold colors, and any number of fonts, type sizes and angles, punctuated by computer-generated sounds. Chances are, they've been so overwhelmed by sensory overload that they weren't able to concentrate at all - and somewhere deep inside, they're afraid you'll be just as bad. Doesn't mean you have to be. According to at least one expert in design, the key to effective PowerPoint presentations is to keep the focus on your message, not the way it's presented.
