Fuel Update

Long-standing and evolving programs mandated by the federal Clean Air Act and subsequent amendments to that legislation have led to the establishment of a series of fuel quality standards by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Beginning in 1973 with standards to phase out lead from gasoline, EPA actions in the form of vehicle emissions standards and fuel quality regulations have continued to impact fleet operations. Most recently, EPA has set standards for low sulfur gasoline and diesel to help ensure the effective-ness of emission-control technologies and reduce harmful air pollution.
