At the end of the first year of London Airport operations in 1946, 63,000 people had travelled through its terminal. By the time the airport, now called Heathrow (named after the village demolished to make way for its runways), celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2006, it was handling around 1.4 billion passengers on over 14 million flights.
