The final frontier of fire reform: LGA Fire Conference 2017

As government reform was all over the agenda at conference, there proved a useful counter-point to proceedings - FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack's claiming the rights and values of older institutions such as the National Joint Council. Whilst FIRE provides an in-depth critique of the overall conference themes (see pg 18), coverage in recent months has focused on the inevitability of, and broad agreement on, the need for change. Before focusing on Policing and Fire Minister Brandon Lewis' reassertion of the government's reform position, FIRE considers the validity of some of Matt Wrack's resistance to aspects of the agenda before the National Fire Chiefs Council, reformed Fire Service Inspectorate, police and crime commissioners and some form of professional standards body sweeps all before it.
