Flood control

Exercise triton 04 - an exercise designed to test resilience and preparedness in the event of extreme flooding in England and Wales - took place in the summer of 2004. The simulation involved more than 60 organisations with emergency planning and recovery responsibilities, including the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Cabinet Office and Welsh Assembly Government, the Environment Agency and local authorities. The aim of the Triton scenario — in which flood defences were wiped out, causing mass fatalities and widespread damage to infrastructure, homes and businesses - was to test the plans, resources and competencies of the organisations involved, not only in responding to the unfolding flooding event but also in dealing with post-emergency recovery.
