Great expectations

New year is always a time for reflecting on what has happened over the previous 12 months; looking forward to the year to come; and perhaps making a new start, particularly where there have been problems or disagreement. 2004 has been a year of immense change for the UK fire community. Although the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order is yet to be enacted, the introduction of the Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004 and the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, has resulted in a great deal of soul-searching for the fire and rescue service. 2004 saw the fire service dispute finally laid to rest and the implementation of the modernisation agenda has resulted in changes in outlook and working practices throughout the service.
