Many modern building designs vary from prescriptive fire safety guidance, and require a risk-based design approach to address the specific characteristics of the building and its occupants. Bishop's Court - a new-build retirement living scheme in southwest England - is one such example. This article outlines how Buro Happold's Fire Engineering Group was appointed by Yarlington Housing Group (YHG) to undertake a fire safety review of the Bishop's Court scheme and develop a holistic fire engineering brief and supporting fire strategy during design and into operation. The retirement complex was officially opened in October 2010.
