Essex fire authority is to fund a £250,000 sprinkler retrofit scheme in properties identified at high risk of fire. The fire authority, councils and housing associations will work together to target properties with vulnerable residents, with a history of fire or problems in achieving fire safety, and also high-rise premises. The average cost of retrofitting a typical house is estimated at £2,500. Included in the list will be 80-90 flats on the 1970s Felmore housing estate in Basildon, which has suffered several fires in recent years .
