Government attacked over Trade Union Bill

The government has opened a consultation period over its proposals to tighten the rules on strike ballots. Under current rules all that is needed for a strike is a simple majority of those who take part in a ballot. But the Conservatives have tabled a new Trade Union Bill, which will require a minimum 50% turnout - and public sector strikes would need the backing of at least 40% of those eligible to vote. The reforms had a first reading in Parliament in July, but the bill was not debated. A consultation period will be open until September and then the bill will have its second reading in the House of Commons. The proposals would force unions to give employers 14 days'notice of any planned strike action and allow them to bring in agency staff as cover.
