摘要

You've heard the old expression, "He can't see the forest for the trees," which means the details of a situation prevent someone from appreciating the bigger picture. In fire investigation, it's essential to examine the trees — the details — to appreciate the forest — the bigger picture of what happened during a fire and why. For instance, when evaluating why a particular room seemed to burn so completely, investigators need to understand what type of wall covering was in the room. Was it gypsum board, wallboard (a composite material essentially made of paper), paneling or something else? If it was one of those materials, how thick was it? Could multiple types of wall coverings have layered the walls? You could be the fortunate one to find a section of the bottom of the wall behind the baseboard and think you've answered the question; however, don't jump to the conclusion you've established what indeed covered the walls just by looking behind the baseboard. Frequently, do-it-yourselfers (and maybe even some "professionals") install paneling directly over a previous wall surface without removing the baseboard.
