摘要

If you're wondering how in the world Grant Vaughan turns his extraordinary vessels, the answer is simple: He doesn't. "I don't even own a lathe," he says. "There's no turning in them whatsoever." Vaughan does most of the work with an Arbortech power carver, a cutterhead with carbide teeth that mounts on an angle grinder. He works delicate details with chisels and spends a lot of time sanding. All told, from first sketches through scale models, shop drawings, carving, finishing, and photography, one of Vaughan's vessels can take six weeks to complete. The primary carving alone can take three weeks, and another week might be devoted to refining the finished shape. Each vessel sells for between $4,000 and $10,000.
