When the process engineer faces the question of choosing a filter medium, he also considers the device for holding the medium in the process stream. That is, he may employ a flat-sheet medium or a tubular cartridge-type filter. The flat-sheet design is straightforward. Consider the fluid-approach velocity while measuring filtration efficiency, as well as measuring the volume of liquid passing per area of the filter medium, before the medium either plugs with small solids, or a cake of permeable solids forms. In the case of a tubular cartridge, the liquid does not evenly feed the surfaces of the medium. After all, both the feed and the exit ports are at the same end of the cartridge, and some cartridges are very long. Thus, a filter-performance test has to be tied to the configuration of the filter medium.
