Municipal Filter Press Sludge Dewatering Testing

Municipal sewage sludge de-watering problems are well known with standard recess filter presses. (Photo 1) These problems are mainly associated with long dewatering cycles, press cloth blinding and short life, and the lack of suitable lab tests for predicting performance. As a result, a series of on-site 470mm pilot tests were conducted. These tests demonstrated that cloth blinding wasn't an issue but that underdrain condition was important (i.e., both the underdrain cloths as well as the plate drainage grooves) (1). In addition, it was concluded that membrane plates offer no advantage over the current standard recess operation; and that the "long dewatering tail" phenomenon could not be duplicated in the 470mm pilot press.
