The AFS has held many student poster competitions with entries from multiple universities over the years. Student participation began over 20 years ago when George Chase, Ph.D., Professor, University of Akron, began bringing graduate students to AFS conferences, which continues to this day, and said, "Students need to meet people, learn about various technologies, and see where their research contributes to the industry's needs. The latter greatly motivates the students to participate in the AFS and to contribute." Chase is the originator of the Student Poster Competition and the AFS has always waived participating students' admission to conferences. In addi- tion to classroom lecture responsibilities, Chase also manages The Coalescence Filtration Nanofibers Consortium at the University of Akron with Dr. Darrell Reneker, where several leading filtration companies support on-going research.
