Non-zero wave growth minima for narrow band electron cyclotron waves

Conditions for generation of narrow band electron cyclotron whistler mode waves in terms of temporal and normalized wave growths are studied for 2.4 ≤ L ≤ 8.2. Considering non-linear interaction, the temporal growth rate is minimized which is found out to be 924/Z~(11/3) N~(5/6) s~(-1) (L is Mcllwain parameter, N the electron density in cm~(-3)). It is observed that there will be no triggering if normalized growth rate is below 10~(-7) inside as well as outside the plasmasphere. The results are utilized to explain the occurrence rate of narrow band electron cyclotron waves reported by Ondoh [ Radio Sci (USA), 28 (1993) 629]. These cyclotron waves were observed aboard ISIS satellites.
