Bryophyte flora of the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. LVII. Fleischerobryum and Philonotis (Bartramiaceae, Musci)

The family Bartramiaceae has six genera, Bartramia Hedw., Breutelia (Bruch & Schimp.) Schimp., Conostomum Sw., Fleischerobryum Loeske, Leiomela (Mitt.) Broth. and Philonotis Brid. in Western Melanesia. Fleischerobryum longicolle (Hampe) Loeske is for the first time recorded for Western Melanesia. The genus Fleischerobryum is revised worldwide to have only two species, F. longicolle and F. macrophyllum Broth. Six species of Philonotis are dealt with in this paper. They are P. calomicra Broth., P. hastata (Duby) Wijk & Marg., P. mollis (Dozy & Molk.) Mitt., P. runcinata C. Muell, ex Aongstroem, P. thwaitesii Mitt, and P. vescoana (Besch.) Par. Seventeen names are reduced as synonyms and 10 lectotypes are selected (indexed). Philonotis calomicra is for the first time recorded for the Philippines and Samoa, P. runcinata for Fiji, Philippines, New Caledonia, Sabah and Western Melanesia, P. thwaitesii for Tonga and P. vescoana for Fiji, Western Melanesia and Vanuatu. Key to Western Melanesian Philonotis is given with the descriptions and illustrations of the species. Distributions in Western Melanesia are given along with the total range. The work includes taxonomic and nomenclatural discussions.
