摘要

Shipping is taken for granted by hundreds of millions of people living in the developed world, but not by the 50 people living on one of the world's remotest islands - Pitcairn -the Pacific island that was central to the film Mutiny on the Bounty. So what does shipping mean to such a small and remote community? Meralda Warren, a seventh-generation islander, revealed to Fairplay that it is not all roses. The key problem the island currently faces is uncertainty. Since the restructuring of the Europe/Australasia and North America/Australasia trades at the start of this year, the regular shipping opportunities, supplied initially by ACT(A) ships in the late 1970s and 1980s and subsequently by the same ships operating under Blue Star Line and P&O Nedlloyd control, are no longer around. The final 'Star' vessel to call at Pitcairn was the America Star (formerly ACT 3) in January.
