Port links up on the Lakes

Never a fan of golf, the Captain is astonished to learn there is a port in Chicago that makes more money from golf than cargo. Our daily news service reported last week that the Civic Federation, a local non-profit research group, says that the Illinois Port District has carried out only one major construction project since it opened the Iroquois Landing on the lakefront in 1981. And that project was the 36-hole Harborside International Golf Center, opened in 1993. But for the past 15 years that centre has been pulling in the putters and is now the district's leading source of revenue, despite the port claiming to be a leading general cargo port on the Great Lakes.
